The US has declared Badaruddin Haqqani, the leader of Afghan Taliban faction Haqqani network, a “specially designated global terrorist,” a move that will seize any assets he has within U.S. jurisdiction. The measure taken by US Secretary of State Hillary R. Clinton also prohibits US nationals from dealings with him. “This action will help stem the flow of financial and other assistance to this dangerous individual,” said a statement from the State Department. Badaruddin is the son of an Afghan warlord, who founded the Haqqani network that operates from its safe havens in North Waziristan and fights coalition troops in eastern Afghanistan. US had supported Jalaluddin Haqqani in the 80s, during the Afghan jihad against the Soviets.
