The US on Tuesday expressed concerns over Israel’s plans to build over 900 new houses in east Jerusalem- the land which the Palestinians consider their future capital. “We are deeply concerned about the announcement of the approval for these units,” said State Department spokesperson Mark Toner, as US President Obama met Israeli President Shimon Peres at the White House. “We believe that through good-faith, direct negotiations the parties should mutually agree on an outcome that realizes the aspirations of both parties,” he added. The US doesn’t accept the legality of continued Jewish settlements on lands that Israel had captured during the 1967 War.
