Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has appreciated Arab league observer mission to Syria, believing it will protect the Syrian people and calm down the situation there. A 50-member AL observer team will arrive in Syria on Monday. On 19th Dec, Syria granted the permission to AL to send an observer mission team after the pan-Arab group threatened to take the issue to Security Council.

Lavrov reiterated that during 2011, Russia has dispatched teams to curb violence and conflict through a national dialogue between all political, religious, and ethnic groups.
The AL team is to monitor Syria’s compliance to end the crackdown on dissent, which according to UN estimate has led to 5000 civilians deaths, while 2000 deaths of Syrian army and security personnel.
