An operation against the Haqqani network has been launched in the border areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Afghan Defense Minister Gen Abdul Rahim Wardak on Tuesday told media in Kabul that Afghan and NATO led forces would purge the border area of the militant group.
Chief of Army Staff Gen. Sher Mohammad Karimi said the “Operation Knife Edge”, which began two days ago would eliminate insurgents on both sides of the Afghan and Pakistan border. The chief of army staff also told reporters billions of dollars worth arms had been obtained to fight the militants. $5bilion a year would be spent on national security forces after the withdrawal of foreign troops in 2014.
