Condemnation and condolences poured in for the Nigerian bombings. The attacks occurred during the Christmas celebrations and killed about 40 people. A militant Islamist group, Boko Haram, has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Boko Haram, which means ‘Western education is haram’ wants the imposition of ‘shraiah’ in Nigeria. One of the blasts took place outside a church near the capital Abuja, while the others occurred in Jos and Damatru. The White House has pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The group had carried out similar attacks last year around Christmas Eve and was involved in bombing the UN headquarters in Abuja, this year in August.
