Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday announced strong cooperation in fighting terrorist networks was needed for peace to prevail in Afghanistan. Karzai said terrorist networks were on a campaign of destruction and had sanctuaries outside the country. The Afghan president accused Pakistan of harboring terrorists and for not doing enough in the fight against extremism. Pakistan has denied allegations that it supports militant groups.
Karzai was speaking in Istanbul at a summit to discuss Afghanistan. The global conference included various countries including Pakistan, China, India and Iran as well as various aid agencies and non-governmental organizations. The summit host, Turkish President Abdullah Gul, said the aim of the summit was “to restore security in Afghanistan” for which “genuine solidarity is a must.”
