Context
Iran will be conducting 10-day naval drills in the Strait of Hormuz, in the proximity of US navy vessels. The drills might put the strait at risk if the rising tension between US and Iran results in an escalation. Iran does not plan to close the strait, as it was rumored, which led to the sudden spike in oil prices.
The Strait of Hormuz sees more than one third of the world’s oil traffic pass through it, making it a vital transit point. Iran will feature the newest Iranian missile torpedo system and coordination between submarines and warships. The Strait of Hormuz is defended by Iranian navy on the east, and by elite Revolutionary Guards in the gulf.
