Britain on Wednesday ordered for the immediate closure of the Iranian embassy in London following the ransacking of its embassy in Tehran, and the Iranian governments decision to expel its British ambassador.

British Foreign Secretary, William Hague told the Parliament; “the Iranian charge (d’affaires) in London is being informed now that we require the immediate closure of the Iranian embassy in London and that all Iranian diplomatic staff must leave the United Kingdom within the next 48 hours.”

He accused the Iranian government of supporting the incident, saying it could not have happened without “some degree of regime consent”. Hague also informed parliament that the British embassy in Tehran had been closed, and staff evacuated. He however clarified that Britain had not yet severed its diplomatic ties with Iranian regime.
Other European countries have also expressed concern regarding storming of the British embassy by protestors, with Germany recalling its ambassador to Iran for consultation after the incident. Norway has also closed its embassy in Iran.
