Fatah, Hamas Sign A Reconciliation Deal In Doha

1029

Western backed Abbas and Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal have finally signed the ‘Doha Declaration’. The agreement states that Palestinian government will be made up of ‘independent technocrats’ who will also oversee the reconstruction efforts in Gaza. The deal accepts Abbas as the over all Prime Minister of the interim government that will hold elections. Abbas replaces Salam Fayyad as the head of Palestinian Authority in West Bank.

The deal is being seen as a major breakthrough after four years of separate governments in West Bank and Gaza. The division has also been a source of complication in progress towards the stagnant Middle East Peace Process. Meshaal has stated that both parties are committed to ending the hostilities of the past, to resist the enemy, and achieve national goals.
