Egyptian anti-riot police and army cleared Cairo’s al-Tahrir Square Monday of demonstrators, mostly youngsters, who had staged a weeks-long sit-in to protest against the sluggish pace of reform after the Jan 25 revolt that forced Hosni Mubarak to resign. The military tortured young people and detained dozens who tried to fight back. Tents were destroyed and dumped into garbage trucks. The protestors had said that they would leave the square and dismantle their tents during the holy month of Ramadan, which began on Monday, but hundreds still remained there, according to state television.
