Context
The US has announced it is ready to work with Islamic groups in the Middle East. The US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton said on Monday the US would maintain diplomatic relations with Islamic groups that came to power through democratic process; Tunisia’s Islamist party Ennahda won the elections last month. Clinton said the party must “persuade secular parties to work with them… America will work with them, too.”
However she stressed the party must meet democratic principles; reject violence, and respect women rights and minorities. Clinton declared that opinions that present Islam was in conflict with democracy were uninformed and wrong. She also stressed that the US need to push reforms with conviction to maintain stability in the region.
