The Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has said the US is open to brokering a peace deal which includes the Haqqani network. Clinton on Tuesday stated, “where we are right now is that we view the Haqqanis and other of their ilk as, you know, being adversaries and being very dangerous to Americans, Afghans and coalition members inside Afghanistan, but we are not shutting the door on trying to determine whether there is some path forward.” The inclusion of the militant network believed responsible for the killings of US troops in Kabul is a controversial idea in Washington, but officials suggest that the US wants to keep its options open for peace talks.

Despite these statements, Clinton insists the US will not change its military strategy, claiming a tough stance will bring the militants to the negotiating table.
