Context
Tunisia’s Islamist party has emerged victorious in the country’s elections. The Ennahda party won nearly 30% of the 217 seats in the assembly. Other reports have suggested the party obtained close to 50 percent of the votes in Sunday’s elections. Results have not yet been officially declared, however the Tunisian media has declared the party’s victory.
Ennahda has said it wants to implement Shariah law into the country which it claims will be in line with progressive democratic values to include women rights. The party has a huge task ahead of it; the elections on Sunday were the first after the Arab Spring saw the removal of the former dictatorial government. Ennahda on taking over will need to appoint a new interim government and write the country’s constitution.
