During the visit of Indian external affairs minister SM Krishna, Israel has said that it wants India to become a permanent member of the expanded United Nations Security Council. President Shimon Peres said Tel Aviv was following New Delhi with great interest. He said ‘India is first of all a culture. Then it is for us the greatest democracy on earth and then the unbelievable achievement of overcoming poverty without becoming poor in freedom”.

Krishna will also meet President Netanyahu in attempts to widen the scope of partnership to many other areas, especially defense. Talks on anti-terror cooperation are also likely to be held.

Krishna earlier visited Jordan and his trip to the region is being seen as the nations attempt to understand the dynamics of the Arab Spring and change underway in the Middle East.
