Government To Fully Defend Husain Haqqani

Context

The government is contemplating an aggressive defense of former Ambassador Husain Haqqani, even if the Supreme Court (SC) convicts him in the Memogate scandal. After the decision of Pakistan’s SC that the petitions against the former Ambassador were maintainable, his lawyer Asma Jehangir has announced that she would no longer be representing his client. Asma Jehangir considers the commission hostile and being manipulated by ISI.

The government is also considering extending the process beyond the 40-day deadline given by the apex court. Meanwhile, the government’s legal team, through its high commission in Canada, has contacted the mobile company Research in Motion. It would check the authenticity of the electronic communications exchanged between Mansoor Ijaz and Husain Haqqani.
