Context
Heavy rain has caused flooding and has crippled Karachi, Pakistan’s largest commercial city. Many schools and businesses remained closed on Tuesday with traders forced to close down the stock market early due to poor attendance. According to reports, nearly 280,000 people have been made homeless with 1.2 million houses destroyed due to heavy rainfalls this year. Reports suggest 50 to 100 mm of rainfall has been recorded in Karachi. Last year Pakistan faced the country’s worst natural disaster, with floods killing 2000 and making nearly 11 million homeless.
Health workers fear an outbreak of diseases caused by the flooding. Punjab has already closed down schools due to the outbreak of dengue in the city.
