Context

The US and Bolivia have made steady progress in re-establishing their diplomatic ties through talks focusing on mutual respect of sovereignty, Bolivia’s Communications Minister Ivan Canelas told reporters at the Bolivian Palace of Government on Monday. He revealed that several potential agreements were being closely analyzed by the two countries, which would make the restoration of diplomatic ties possible. Diplomatic ties between the two nations had suffered a heavy blow in Oct 2008 when Bolivian President Evo Morales expelled the US ambassador to the country for allegedly conspiring against Bolivia’s democracy. Washington responded with expelling the Bolivian ambassador. Since then, bilateral ties have only been maintained at the business level between the two nations.
