America has stepped up air assaults on suspected Al-Qaeda militants in Yemen in an attempt to prevent them from gaining power as the country’s government teeters, reported The New York Times on Wednesday. A senior American official confirmed that Abu Ali al-Hairithi, a mid-level Al-Qaida operative, was killed last Friday in a US strike. Citing American officials, the newspaper said that a campaign using fighter jets and armed drones has been stepped up in recent days as American officials see these attacks as an effective option to contain Al-Qaida in the Middle East.
