As many as 100,000 residents of Kurram tribal area have fled their houses after the security forces launched an operation against militants earlier this month, authorities said Wednesday. “We have so far registered at least 9,944 families — up to 100,000 people,” said Sahibzada Anis, a high-ranking government official supervising assistance for the refugees. He also said that around 1,800 families had taken shelter in makeshift camps while others were living in rented premises or relatives’ houses. Taliban and militant groups active in neighboring Afghanistan have reportedly set up training camps and bases in Kurram.
