Context
A Pakistani court charged an extremist cleric on Monday, who once mediated a peace deal with the Taliban in Swat, with murder and treason, according to lawyers. Sufi Muhammad, father-in-law of Maulana Fazalullah, the Taliban commander who was in control of the valley from late 2007 until early 2009 before a military operation was conducted there, was taken into custody two years ago. He will now go on trial in an anti-terror court in Swat. Muhammad won’t defend himself in the court since he doesn’t recognize the system.
