The rare trip by a top Russian military general to Pakistan is a sign of enhancing relations between the cold-war rivals. Ground Forces Commander-in-Chief Colonel General Alexander Postnikov met Pakistani Army Chief Gen. Ashfaque Pervez Kiyani at the GHQ in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. He also held a separate meeting with Gen. Khalid Shameem Wynne, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Sources said that the discussions focused on issues of professional interest including the endgame in Afghanistan and how Moscow and Islamabad can help restore peace in that war-ravaged country. The visit comes at a time when US-Pakistan ties are severely strained following Bin Laden’s death.
