Russia Furious over US Maneuvers near Georgia

Moscow is furious over the maneuvers of US Navy cruiser USS Monterey carrying the air defense system on the Black Sea close to the Georgian coast, said the Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday. The American warship arrived to participate in joint naval drills with Georgia as part of Washington’s Phased Adaptive Approach meant to form the European division of the American-led initiative to set up a global missile defense shield. Russia is deeply concerned over the deployment of a missile defense system close to its borders saying that it is a threat to the country’s national security. The US says it requires the system to guard against likely threats from North Korea or Iran.
