A spokesman for the Taliban, Zabiullah Mujahid has raised doubts about the identity of a key interlocutor the US officials say they have engaged with. Washington had recently disclosed that senior State Department and Central Intelligence Agency officials have had secret ‘exploratory conversations’ with Tayyab Agha, believed to be a close aide of Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar in Qatar and Germany. The Taliban spokesman believes the Americans had been taken in by an imposter, and that Tayyab Agha has never met with US officials.
