Syrian official media claimed that at least 23 persons had been killed and more than 350 injured on Sunday after Israeli troops fired shots to disperse protestors trying to breach the frontier. The dead included a 12-year old child and a woman, the SANA news service quoted Syrian health minister Wel al-Halki as saying. The reported killings occurred as pro-Palestinian protesters marched towards the border from the Golan Heights to mark the “Day of Defeat”, observing the 44th anniversary of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, when Israel took control of the area.
