Context
The recent release of shocking photographs showing US troops apparently committing brutalities against unarmed Afghan civilians might spark tensions between the US and Afghan governments and provide a boost to the Taliban’s efforts to convince Afghans that foreign soldiers present in the country are a malicious force. Western diplomats and NATO officials in Afghanistan fear that the publication of photos could further undermine ties with President Karzai at a very sensitive time when several incidents of civilian casualties have angered the Karzai administration.
