Pakistani army on Tuesday confirmed that a brigadier serving at the General Headquarters [GHQ] was taken into custody for his alleged ties to the extremist group “Hizbut Tehrir”—which calls for a revolt against pro-US rulers. Brigadier Ali Khan, who worked as a director for rules and regulations at the GHQ, was arrested on May 5 by the military’s Special Investigation Branch. He is the most senior military official yet to be detained for extremist ties. Khan, who received training from America and was due to retire shortly, was earlier deprived of promotion due to his extremist views.
