The Nord Stream pipeline was launched to deliver Russian gas to an estimated 26 million homes in the European Union. Russian President Medvedev and German Chancellor Angela Merkel released the symbolic valve on Tuesday to discharge the Russian gas. The ceremony took place in the German town of Lubmin.

Medevev told reporters “We are interested in the development of the gas distribution infrastructure, erecting modern and environmentally-friendly generating capacity, including steam-to-gas power stations. We are counting on there being no kinds of artificial barriers on the road of co-operation, even in spite of the differing approaches that are heard.”
