Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Bashir has been sentenced to 15 years in prison on Thursday for helping plan and fund a militant camp in the western province of Aceh that aimed to assassinate the Indonesian president. The country has been put on a high state of alert after the court’s verdict, amid fears that Abu Bakar’s supporters might seek revenge. This isn’t the first time Abu Bakar has spent time in prison or faced terror charges. He was taken into custody following the 2002 Bali bomb attacks, but released 18 months later as prosecutors couldn’t prove a series of terror allegations against him.
