India Warns Against Hasty Withdrawal From Afghanistan

India on Friday warned against hasty withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. New Delhi expressed concerns over the security situation in Afghanistan and urged that decisions should be made keeping the ground realities in mind. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Hardeep Singh Puri said his country was concerned due to the increasing terrorist attacks in the country, which have targeted political leaders such as former president Burhanudin Rabbani. The UN Secretary General’s 2011 report suggests security incidents have increased this year by 39 percent. He said the stability in the region can only be achieved once terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda and Taliban are rooted out of Afghanistan.

Puri reaffirmed India’s commitment to working with Kabul in bring about regional security. India currently provides nearly two billion dollars in assistance to Afghanistan.
