British PM’s Push for Early Troop Withdrawal Alarms US



The Daily Telegraph revealed last week that in post Osama bin Laden environment, Prime Minister David Cameron has instructed British military commanders to begin planning for withdrawing hundreds of British soldiers from Afghanistan within weeks.

However, Senior US military officials have warned their British counterparts that a hurried pullout from Afghanistan could strain ties between the two nations. The possibility of a hasty British pullout is said to have worried US generals, who are attempting to resist domestic public and political pressure for a significant reduction in the number of US troops. Informed sources said US generals had issued a clear warning to the British over the consequences of an early withdrawal.

The news reveals the political and economic pressures with in NATO regarding the strategy for Afghanistan.
