Britain wants India to support the soon to be introduced UN resolution on Syria that threatens Assad regime with sanctions if he does not implement the ceasefire immediately. For this purpose, Britain has dispatched a top delegation to India to explain western position on Syria.

Irfan Siddiq who is the Head of the Arab Partnership Department, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, commented that India should support the resolution since it’s in the long-term interest of the region, and thus it should play a pro-active role in the change underway in the Middle East.

“India should support the UN resolution. It will be in its long-term interest in the region…India has huge interest in the region and huge opportunities for solid cooperation,” he said.
Indian support for the western stance will increasingly put in an adversarial position with Iran.
