In the wake of Bin Laden’s death, officials in the administration of President Karzai are calling on America to get tougher with Islamabad and reinforce its commitment to Kabul. They have demanded decisive US action to prevent Pakistan from supporting the Taliban. This is a big turnaround from a few weeks ago when Pakistan’s Prime Minister Gillani asked Karzai to get rid of America and rather seek a regional partnership with China and Pakistan. Some officials within the Karzai administration viewed this proposal as an attempt by Pakistan to interfere with US initiatives in order to end the conflict in Afghanistan on its own terms.
