Context

A senior adviser to President Hamid Karzai was killed at his house in Kabul near the Afghan parliament, a top government official said on Sunday. Jan Muhammad Khan, a key partner of the embattled president and ex governor of the southern province of Uruzgan, died in an attack. The assassination comes less than one week after Karzai’s half-brother Ahmad Wali Karzai was shot dead at his residence in the Kandahar province by a close friend. Khan’s death will further complicate the political situation in southern Afghanistan, where the Taliban are fighting the US and NATO for control of that region.
