Google announced on Wednesday it had uncovered a rigorous Chinese effort to hack into the private email accounts of top US officials, Chinese military personnel, journalists and political activists. The search giant said in a blog post that the objective of this campaign was to “monitor the contents of these users’ emails, with the perpetrators apparently using stolen passwords to change peoples’ forwarding and delegation settings.” According to Google, it has disrupted the campaign and notified victims and concerned government authorities.
