Context
A joint Afghan and Coalition special operations unit captured the commander of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan [IMU] during a recent operation in the northern Afghan province of Kunduz. IMU is believed to have close ties to Al-Qaeda and has been carrying out attacks on coalition and Afghan troops in Afghanistan. The top IMU commander, whose name was not disclosed, was taken into custody along with his two associates, ISAF said in a press release. The capture came after several weeks of “intelligence gathering and coordination with Afghan security forces,” it added.
