Context
The UN Security Council lifted the no-fly zone over Libya on Thursday. The Libyan interim leader Ibrahim Dabbashi told the council his country was “looking forward to terminating the no-fly zone over Libya.” The 15 member council voted unanimously this week to lift the regulations.
Mikhail Margelov, who heads the Russian foreign affairs committee, said the decision “signifies an end to the NATO military operation and simultaneously reinstates Libya’s sovereignty in full.” Russia has applauded the decision to lift the ban. Moscow had opposed intervention by NATO into Libya and had termed the decision a move against the sovereignty of the country and a breach of the councils 1970 and 1973 resolutions.
The draft resolution for the removal of the no fly-zones was co-sponsored by Russia and Britain.
