Japan Disaster Turns Germany, Israel Against Nuclear Energy

Context
Nuclear crisis in Japan induced German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday to pledge a quick shift from nuclear power. It also appears to have thwarted Israel’s plan to build a nuclear power plant that was supposed to provide electricity to Israel. Many other European countries, from Switzerland to Finland, have become more doubtful over nuclear energy following the recent nuclear crisis in Japan.

In India, there have been calls by the public to renounce all the existing nuclear programs as well as the much-touted US-India Nuclear Deal in the wake of the disaster in Japan. The Indian government, however, has been trying to reassure the public that such crisis can’t happen in India, as the country is not as vulnerable to quakes as Japan.
