In an interview with a news channel on Thursday, the Russian President said that “Those who are chanting anti-government slogans are very diverse people. Some are clearly extremists; some could even be described as terrorists.” Medvedev admitted the Syrain authorities are guilty of excessive force against protestors, but emphasized the opposition should also be pressurized to refrain from violence.

The West has proposed tough economic sanctions on Syria to force Bashar al-Assad’s to step down. These moves have so far been blocked in the UN Security Council by Moscow.

In a recent statement, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said the BRICS nations which comprise of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will prevent Syria from following down the path of Libya. He called for the UN Security Council to demand for an end to violence in the country. Lavrov said that BRICS members opposed EU moves to impose sanctions on Syria calling them harmful and ineffective.

The EU, which buys 95 percent of Syrian oil, has imposed an oil embargo against Syria, and has threatened further sanctions, in a move to force President Assad’s regime to give up power.

In an interview on Monday on Russia Today, Churkin said “The draft resolution on Syria is completely non-objective and it envisages pressure on the Syrian authorities only.” He also said his country feared radical Syrian elements coming to the forefront in any move to topple the government.

In a recent message to Syrian President Bashar al Assad, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev asked for an immediate stop to violence. Moscow also urged for dialogue, stating it vital for restoration of order in the country.

After the supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad broke into the American embassy in Damascus on Monday, direct criticism of al-Assad was heard for the first time in Washington since he started his violent crackdown on protestors in March. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that al-Assad “is not indispensable and we have absolutely nothing invested in him remaining in power.” Embassy staff took shelter in a fortified section of the building as the mob wrecked the embassy’s equipment, wrote offensive phrases on the walls and raised Syria’s flag while Syrian armed forces watched and did nothing.
