The main suspect, Islamic Jihad member Ismael al-Asmar, age 34 is believed to be responsible for the transfer of funds used in Thursday’s attacks.

New security measures include electronic and visual intelligence gathering as well as strengthening the Navy Command Center in the Israeli city of Eilat.

Context

The Turkish General Staff said on Tuesday that some 100 terrorists were killed and more than 80 were injured in three consecutive days of air strikes against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq. The raids were in response to PKK attacks last Wednesday which killed eight soldiers and a village guard in the Çukurca district of Hakkari.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said on Tuesday that his government condemned the operation and considered it an infringement on Iraqi sovereignty. The PKK is fighting for autonomy in southeastern Turkey and has used northern Iraq for attacks on Turkish targets. Tens of thousands of lives have been lost in the conflict since 1984.
