The beheading of Ruutu Binti Satubi—who was executed in Saudi Arabia in June for murdering her allegedly insulting Saudi employer—sparked such a backlash in Indonesia. Even the biggest supporters of Saudi Arabia’s Wahhabi Islam in Indonesia are questioning how the guardians of the most sacred Islamic sites be so neglectful of their religion’s call for sympathy. The beheading triggered angry protests in front of the Saudi Embassy and in another places.

The Indonesian government, complaining it didn’t receive any advance notification of Satubi’s beheading, called back its ambassador from Riyadh. The country also declared a halt to labor exports to Saudi Arabia from August 1st.
