The US is holding back some $800mn in military assistance to Pakistan, about one third of the $2.7bn security package it provides every year, President Obama’s chief of staff said over the weekend. Ties between Islamabad and Washington have deteriorated drastically since the US raid in Abbottabad killed Bin Laden in May. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned last month that the US would cut down military assistance to Pakistan if it failed to take unspecified measures to help America. Now, it seems that it has, as Chief of Staff William Daley confirmed a report in the New York Times that Washington was withholding, and in some cases, canceling $800mn of military assistance.

Pakistan army has claimed that these cuts would not impact the nations military operations in Kurram and Mohmand. “The army in the past as well as at present, has conducted successful military operations using its own resources without any external support whatsoever,” military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told AFP.

Meanwhile India has welcomed the US move. “It is not desirable that this region had to be heavily armed by the US, which will upset the equilibrium in the region itself,” External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna has stated, according to PTI news agency.

A top Taliban leader has threatened to strike nine more major Pakistani installations similar to the attack on PNS Mehran Base in Karachi in order to avenge Osama bin Laden’s death. “The revenge game has already been started from Pakistan. The attack on Mehran Naval Base in Karachi was the first in the line of 10 that Taliban has planned to avenge the death of bin Laden,” said Wali-ur-Rehman, commander of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan in South Waziristan, in an interview this week.

Pakistan on Thursday assured US lawmakers it was looking into a complaint that its military had tipped off militants operating two IED factories in Waziristan, before action could be taken against them. The assurance was conveyed by a Pakistani delegation led by Ambassador Hussain Haqqani during a meeting with senior US lawmakers. During the meeting, the delegation was asked to explain how Bin Laden was able to live in a Pakistani town for so long. The lawmakers were assured by the delegation that a high-level commission was being formed to thoroughly investigate the episode. The Pakistanis, however, asked the lawmakers to also examine why no need was felt to inform Islamabad ahead of the raid.

Context

Pakistan’s top intelligence agency has taken into custody five Pakistani informants who provided information to the CIA in weeks leading up to the operation that killed Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad, US officials have said. The informants include a military major who, according to officials, copied the number plates of vehicles visiting Bin Laden’s residence in the days before the operation. While the fate of these five men is unclear, US officials said CIA Director Leon Panetta raised the matter with Pakistani intelligence and military officers last week during his visit to Islamabad.

Faced with mounting international criticism following the death of Osama Bin Laden on its soil, Pakistan was rescued by its old ally China on Tuesday, which announced “unswervingly” support for Islamabad’s anti-terrorism efforts. “Pakistan has made very important contribution to international counter terrorism cooperation as well as great sacrifices,” said China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Jiang Yu, as Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani commenced a trip to the country. “Indeed Pakistan is the victim of terrorism,” Yu added.

Pakistan has agreed to return the tail of the US top-secret stealth helicopter used in the operation that killed Al-Qaeda leader Bin Laden. The decision was taken during a meeting between Pakistani officials and US Senator John Kerry in Islamabad on Monday night. “Tomorrow the tail of the helicopter will be returned to America,” the senator told reporters after the meeting. The US was worried that the advanced military technology used in the tail of the helicopter might be reverse-engineered by China.
