Syrian people. Russian ambassador to Syria Azamat Kulmukhametov said the visit of the Russian vessels highlighted the deep-rooted relations between the two friendly countries.
Commodore Yakushin Vladimir Anatolievich, head of the Russian military warships, said Saturday that the visit by the vessels is to shorten the distance between the two countries and to enhance the friendship between them. Russia has said that the vessels will remain in Syria for several days. He added that that the visit was a scheduled exercise to ensure the safety of sea navigation and other Russian maritime economic activities and had nothing to do with the tense situation in Syria.

Syria has warned Jordan from getting involved in the regional military quagmire. Earlier this week, Jordan embarked on a large-scale mobilization near Syrian borders, with its army prepared to follow suit. The move caused an outburst from Syrian President Bashar Assad who warned King Abdullah, Syria would use force against Jordan if it joins Turkey and Israel in the deployment of troops. Assad also warned that Damascus would launch surface missiles against Jordanian cities in the event of an Israeli intervention. Amman has said it will not continue to deploy and it strongly condemns the actions taken by Assad’s regime.

Tensions have escalated in the Middle East at an alarming rate. According to media reports, Turkey and Israel have begun preparations for war games in coordination with NATO. Syria has also threatened to use missiles against Israel in the event of an attack.

Context

Tensions in the Middle East rose as Turkey announced it would hold military exercises on the Syrian border. Ankara on Wednesday announced it had planned a 10 day mobilization exercise in the southern province of Hatay along the Syrian border. The proposal puts Turkey at odds with Assad’s regime which sees this as an attempt to aid rebels and protestors against Syrian government.

NATO’s European commander Gen James Staviris also visited Ankara last month to discuss plans of the Turkish military exercise which would include the 39th mechanized infantry brigade and 730 reserve soldiers which can then be used for mobilization across the border.

Syria has warned Turkey and more particularly Israel of severe punishment as tensions escalate. Ankara has begun the process of freezing Assad family members’ bank accounts and assets whose worth is estimated at half a billion dollars.
