With cyber attacks becoming increasingly frequent against government servers, President Barack Obama has signed guidelines that will determine how far the military leadership can go in launching online attacks against countries worldwide in events of espionage. The instructions detail what circumstances will require security forces to seek the president’s approval for particular cyber attacks against an enemy, in addition to laying foundation for how the US can frequently incorporate cyber capabilities into its own offensive, said The Associated Press. According to defense officials, the new instructions are similar to the guidelines that detail when and what type of weapons- from missiles to nuclear bombs- can be used during war.

The International Strategy for Cyberspace, revealed at an event at the White House, aims to promote a more secure, open, reliable and interoperable cyber environment, and stresses the need for a global alliance to maintain online freedoms and to impede cyber crime, said a statement posted on the program’s website. The new strategy is being seen as part of the US administration’s aggressive initiatives to define the internet’s future amid contending plans such as the one presented by China, which involves greater control.
