Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader, Nawaz Sharif on Thursday accused the parliament of failing to protect the sovereignty of the country. The former Prime Minister, in an address to a nine member large bench of the Supreme Court, termed the parliament a failure.

“Neither the resolutions of the parliament and the parliamentary committees were implemented nor the joint sessions of the parliament succeeded in achieving its purpose,” Sharif said.

The PML-N has filed 7 charges relating to the memo gate affair and has asked for an independent probe. The Attorney General (AG) of Pakistan Maulvi Anwarul Haq, defended the parliament and asked the court to hold off on an independent probe as “the parliamentary committee has been empowered to collect the evidence in this important affair.

The Supreme Court on Thursday however decided to give the 13 respondents, including President Zardari and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani 15 days to respond to the charges.
