Rick Perry has suggested US military intervention into Mexico to combat drug related violence. The Texas Governor in his campaign speech for republican presidential candidate said that greater US involvement might be necessary to root out drug cartels in Mexico and to prevent them from crossing the US border. The governor did not specify details of the proposed intervention. Mr. Perry’s suggestions of US military intervention are likely to be met with resistance in Mexico which will find deployment of US troops on its soil unacceptable.

The current Obama administration has backed Mexican President Felipe Calderon in his efforts to break the cartels. Material, and intelligence support is being provided to the Mexican government. The US has also deployed National Guard troops to boost border security.
