Context

A top commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards has been killed in a blast at an Iranian base. Commander Brig Gen. Hassan Moghaddam was killed along with 16 other Revolutionary Guards when an explosion rocked the military site outside Bidganeh on Saturday. The explosion is said to have been an accident and is believed to have occurred when troops were transporting amunition. Iranian officials have stressed that the blast was not a terrorist attack by insurgent groups. Dissident groups have often launched attacks on Iranian military bases.

General Moghaddam, was responsible for testing some of Iran’s long range missiles. The Shahab 3 for instance tested under him, is capable of hitting targets 1,250 miles away. This puts Israel in range of Iranian missiles. Media sources are also linking Mossad to the explosion at the military base that killed the commander.
