]]> Contaminated water from Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant is seeping into the sea, according to the operators. The 8in (20cm) crack in a containment vessel at reactor two could be the source of current radiation in sea water, officials of Tokyo Electric Power said. Readings taken on Saturday indicated that radiation has spread to 40 km (25 miles) in coastal waters south of the nuclear plant. The iodine concentration there was double the legal level, but officials asserted that it was still lower than levels considered harmful to human health.

]]> Russian President Dmitry Medvedev appears to be working overtime to mend ties with Japan, sending three planes with humanitarian aid and considering Japan’s urgent request for energy supplies. With four of the six nuclear energy plants down following the massive earthquake and tsunami on the weekend, a significant shortfall of energy is being experienced throughout the country. Apparently Medvedev reinforced his commitment to developing strong economic and trade ties with Japan, and said that Russia would do what they could to help. Relations between the two countries have been troubled recently following Medvedev’s visit to disputed South Keril Islands that Moscow seized from Japan at the end of World War II.
