Context

UK Navy Chief Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope has said that Britain couldn’t keep up its role in the Libya War because of the government’s defense cuts. The Harrier jump-jets and the aircraft carrier scrapped following the 2010 strategic defense review would’ve made the campaign faster, cheaper and more effective, Sir Mark added. He warned that it would be impossible for the Navy to continue its operations in the North African nation for another three months if cuts are not made elsewhere. The remarks are likely to stir the debate on defense cuts which have left the Royal Navy without a functioning aircraft carrier and forced it to scrap plans for Harrier jump-jets.
