Turkey announced its decision to impose economic sanctions against Syria on Wednesday. Turkish foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the decision was made in light of Damascus’s refusal to adhere to the Arab league proposals. “We did our best to bring our relations with Syria to the highest possible level; however, Syrian authorities interpreted the events in the region incorrectly. They refused to pay attention to our warnings and reasons,” Davutoglu said.

The sanction includes a travel backlist consisting of the names of top Syrian officials, freezing of assets of President Bashar al-Assad, suspension of loan agreements with the Syrian Central bank and private banks.

Context

The Syrian Foreign Minister lashed out against the Arab League’s (AL) decision to suspend Syria’s membership on Monday. Walid al Moallem told a press conference that the decision to suspend his country’s membership was “illegal” and “lacked consensus”.

The Syrian FM said his country had made concerted efforts to comply with the Arab plan agreed between Damascus and the League last month. He said his country wanted an end to the crisis and urged the Arab plan to control the borders to prevent weapon influx to armed groups. The Syrian official also criticized AL chief Nabil al Arabi claiming his announcement that the Syrian issue would be referred to international organization was “humiliating.”

The Arab League has asked its members to withdraw ambassadors to Damascus. The league also suggested sanctions be imposed on Syria until it agrees to the terms of the peace plan.
