King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia met with Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Sunday at the royal palace in Jeddah. They discussed the ongoing international and regional developments as well as the prospects of ties between the two nations and ways of boosting them. President Gul’s trip comes within an understanding between Ankara and Riyadh regarding the need to put an end to the brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstrators in Syria. King Abdullah demanded a halt to the violence in Syria last week and called back the Saudi ambassador from Damascus.

Iran has named its ambassador for Egypt after more than 30 years, Iran’s PressTV network reported on Monday. The report said that the appointment came amid an improvement in ties between the two nations, which were strained after the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979 when Iran severed relations with Egypt due to Egypt’s involvement in the Camp David Accords of 1978. The relations remained cold during the 1980s because of Egypt’s support to Iraq in the Iraq-Iran War. The decision to appoint a new ambassador was announced after successful negotiations between the foreign ministers of the two countries.
